Rebelle

We are a feminist non-profit organization based in Brussels. Our goal is to shatter taboos around gender and sexuality. Connecting people and organizing communal events is our focus. We offer a variety of events such as a monthly book club, lectures around our topics and our ‘Café Au Sex’. Our book club is every last Tuesday of the month. We read both feminist classics and upcoming work from new authors. At ‘Café Au Sex’, we create a safe(r)/ brave(r) space and a cozy bar environment in which we talk about sexuality. In the past we discussed topics such as: non binarity and sexuality, sex and shame, myths about sex drive... These are our returning events but we’re constantly thinking about new things. In 2023-2024, we’re starting a photography project around identity and feminism plus many more things are to come.
* Our events are in Dutch. We are looking into unfolding English spoken activities in the future.

Who’s involved in it?

Rebelle has a lot of subdivisions spread out across Flanders. Rebelle Brabant (that organizes all events in Brussels and Leuven) has a small team of three enthusiastic feminists.

What’s your origin story and your motivation?

We originated out of a long existing feminist movement. Our team has a background in social, work, sociology and gender and diversity studies. We’re ever trying to shape our world into a more intersectional feminist one.

Do you want to share a special memory with us?

During the last Café Au Sex with Uwi Van Hauwermeiren (they/them), We felt a true connection amongst the people who were there. People were sharing stories and we felt that people experienced a sense of representation. As organizers, this made us realize that our work is of value.

What are some of your favorite spots in Brussels?

We love De Mercerie, the recently opened art exhibition space and cultural hub. Passa Porta, where our book club is hosted, is one of our favorite bookstores in the city center. The Rosa library is where you want to be if you are looking for feminist literature. If we feel like winding down and in need of a breath of fresh air, Bois de La Cambre is where we want to be.

Could you describe the accessibility of your space?

Our locations are ever changing. At this point, the locations we use are not wheelchair accessible. We are trying to educate ourselves and focus on accessibility when we select a location for our events. Please do not hesitate to communicate tips about this if you feel the need/ want to do this.

Where can we find you virtually and/or physically?
